How To - Voting

Because people are often confused about what would or would not be considered "valid" reasons or what to vote on, etc I've made this post to help people.

The biggest thing I think people need to realize is you aren't voting on the fandoms, or the characters, or the pairings, etc. You are voting based on how well written it is. The next thing that is most important to know is that you need to tell me WHY you think the way you do (like it, don't like it, etc.) This should be constructive criticism and NOT flaming.

The following are good questions to ask yourself when you are reading the entries and deciding on best/least well written.

ALL Comms
VALID REASONS
1. Is the story complete or does it feel like it's missing something?
2. Does the ending flow well or does it seem rushed?
3. Does the story have a beginning, middle, and end?
4. Does the story seem to have a lot of spelling mistakes?
5. Is the story grammatically correct?
6. Does the story switch tense a lot?
7. Does the story “head hop” (change from which character’s perspective it’s written) a lot?
8. Is the story written passively (everything happens *to* the characters rather than the characters taking actions) otherwise known as "telling and not showing"?
9. Does the story fulfill the prompt or does it just seem tacked on?

INVALID REASONS
1. Because you don't like the book, movie, kink, character, pairing and/or fandom that was written/displayed about in the entry.
2. Because you didn't like the title of the story.
3. Because it was filled with angst (or whatever genre) and you don't like angst (or whatever genre).

Books Comm
VALID REASONS
1. For book and movie based fandoms that are movie based as well, does the story use BOOK canon facts (which it should for this book comm), or does it veer off into movie canon?

Crossovers Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Does the author successfully mix the two or more fandoms together or was it mostly just one fandom with another one tacked on?

Doctor & Rose Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Is the story mostly about the Doctor & Rose? (doesn't have to be 100% about them but definitely 75%)
2. Are the Doctor and Rose as "in character" as conceivably possible within the parameters of the story?

INVALID REASONS
1. I didn't like the background characters (if there were any) used.

Drabble Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Is the story EXACTLY 100 words; no less, no more?
2. Does the drabble actually tell a story or is just mostly just 100 random words?
3. Is a complete story or scene expressed within the 100 words?
4. Does the story follow the prompt?
5. Does the author make good use of the 100 words to present good characterization, plot, etc?
6. Is the story engaging and keeps the reader's interest?
7. Does the drabble have a purpose? Does it tell a story, evoke an emotion, define a character?

Fandom Based Comms
VALID REASONS
1. Does the story state canon facts correctly or were facts wrong? [for non-AU]
2. Do the characters seem in character? Can you see them doing what was written? [for fandoms you know and that are not AU]
3. Are the original characters realistic or are they more like MarySue's, etc?
4. Even if you are NOT familiar with a particular fandom, you can still vote. You would vote on grammar, spelling, plot, and fulfilling the prompt in this case.

INVALID REASONS
1. I didn't like the character/fandom/pairing used in the entry.
2. I didn't like the title of the story.
3. I didn't like they wrote about angst (or any other genre) because I don't like angst (or any other genre).

Fanmix Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Does the fanmix have at least 12 songs and no more than 20 songs?
2. Does the fanmix at least contain cover art? (back cover art is optional)
3. Do the songs chosen fit the characters/pairings/etc involved?
4. Do the songs fit the theme of the prompt?
5. Does the cover art fit the theme of the prompt?

INVALID REASONS
1. Because you didn't like the songs they chose.
2. Because you didn't know the song they chose.

Fanvideo Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Is the vid at least 2 minutes long and no more than 5 minutes long?
2. Does it have at least 20 scene/splices?
3. Are the changes in scenes mostly (doesn't have to be perfect) smooth without being jarring?
4. Do the scenes and song(s) work together to tell a story, make a point or evoke an emotion?
5. Is the vid well paced, with a strong narrative or emotional arc?
6. Does the vid have a consistent point of view or central character? Are changes of viewpoint clearly signalled? Or is it just all over the place?
7. Do the scenes coordinate with the different parts of the song or are more upbeat scenes lined up with a slow portion of the song?
8. Is the visual design (effects, transitions, titles) cohesive? Are the effects and/or fancy transitions overused and overdone?
9. Does the vid fulfill the prompt or does it seem unrelated?

Harry/Hermione Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Is the story mostly about the Harry & Hermione? (doesn't have to be 100% about them but definitely 75%)
2. Are the Harry and Hermione as "in character" as conceivably possible within the parameters of the story?

INVALID REASONS
1. I didn't like the background characters (if there were any) used.

Hurt/Comfort Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Is the story actually about some kind of hurt/comfort?
2. Does the story only show one side (hurt but no comfort or visa versa)?

INVALID REASONS
1. You didn't like the specific character hurt.

Jack & Ianto Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Is the story mostly about the Jack& Ianto? (doesn't have to be 100% about them but definitely 75%)
2. Are the Jack and Ianto as "in character" as conceivably possible within the parameters of the story?

INVALID REASONS
1. I didn't like the background characters (if there were any) used.

Kink Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Does the story focus on the kink prompt provided, or does it tend to veer off into other kinks and only touch lightly on the kink prompt?
2. Are the kink(s) within the story written tastefully?

INVALID REASONS
1. I didn't like the specific kink they wrote about.

Movies Comm
VALID REASONS
1. For book and movie based fandoms that are book based as well, does the story use MOVIE canon facts (which it should for this movie comm), or does it veer off into book canon?

Original Fiction Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Is the story original or is more of a revamp of a book/movie/show?
2. Are the characters realistic or are they more like MarySue's, etc?

Picspam Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Does the picspam use at least 30 images and no more than 75?
2. Are the images edited (brightened, colored, etc) or are they just "as if" like when you get them off of a screencap site?

Poetry Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Does the poem fulfill the type of poem prompt or is it a completely different type of poem?
2. Does it have vivid and specific imagery?
3. Does it have a clear theme that carries through the poem?
4. Does it follow the rules of the form of poetry given in the prompt?
5. Are the layout and line breaks consistent and do they add to the overall coherency of the poem? (for free-for-all poems)
6. Does it show with specific imagery as opposed to telling?
7. Is the narrative voice clear and consistent throughout the piece?
8. Is the meaning of the poem clear?

Scenes Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Does the entry paint a picture of a scene and NOT tell an entire story?
2. Does it feel like things were happening before this scene started?
3. At the end of the scene do you want to continue reading to learn what happens next?
4. Does the scene take place in one setting, during a specific (usually short) time period?
5. Does the scene have action and/or conflict/tension?
6. Is the scene set and described in enough detail so that you, the reader, know what the setting/scene looks like?
7. Was the scene memorable and interesting in itself?

Slash Comm
VALID REASONS
1. Are the main characters in the story m/m or f/f?

INVALID REASONS
1. I don't like femslash/slash.
2. I don't like the particicular femslash/slash pairing written about.

The following is a list of real life reasons given and why they ARE NOT valid.

I vote for *** as the least well-written because it confused the hell out of me.
- The reason this was NOT valid was because it didn't tell me why it was confusing.

Because I thought it was kinda expressionless.
- This is harder, as it's borderline valid but I'd probably not accept it because it didn't really go in to any detail to tell me what they meant or why they felt like that.

You misspelled the title, which immediately drew my scrutiny to your story.
- This isn't a valid reason because although the author may have actually misspelled their title it isn't a real reason. First, they may have meant to misspell it for whatever reason and even if they didn't do it in purpose, I just don't think that is reason enough to vote against a fic.

Very heavy on angst, and very light on plot.
- This isn't valid because though the second half might be, the first half shows bias against angst which would be on the same lines of showing bias towards a pairing, a fandom etc, which isn't accepted.

Didn't interest me.
- This isn't valid because it doesn't tell me why it doesn't interest the reader.

There were only two stories to choose from, and I liked the other better. There was nothing wrong with it and it filled the prompt.
- This isn't valid because it doesn't tell me why they liked the other story better -- basically, what is lacking in this one compared to the other one.

The story was grammatically incorrect.
- You didn't tell me HOW it was grammatically incorrect. Like "the story had no many commas and this is how [explanation using actual facts from the story her]
